How The Tactical Mind Helps Athletes Perform and Thrive
At higher levels of competition, physical talent is rarely the difference-maker. Confidence, focus, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure often separate athletes who reach their potential from those who struggle to stay there.
Athletes and parents commonly reach out to me for:
Performance anxiety
Loss of confidence
Mental blocks
Fear of failure
Slumps in performance
Injury recovery
Burnout
Motivation and consistency
As a Sport & Performance Counselor, my goal is to help athletes perform at their best when it matters most while also addressing the mental and emotional challenges that can impact performance. This work can take place through individual sessions or team-based workshops focused on building confidence, resilience, and mental toughness.
For athletes dealing with challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health concerns, sessions can also incorporate a counseling-based approach to provide deeper support.
Mental performance/Sport Psych services are available to athletes nationwide, both in person and virtually. Counseling services are provided to athletes located in Pennsylvania in accordance with state licensure requirements.
Whether you bring your A-game, B-game, or are dealing with your C-stuff, the goal is the same: to help you show up fully and perform at your best with whatever you have that day.
Mental performance work focuses on building the skills needed to compete with confidence, stay composed under pressure, and respond effectively in high-stakes moments, so you’re not just hoping confidence shows up when it matters.
At the same time, performance struggles are often connected to real mental health challenges.
Athletes frequently experience performance anxiety, panic symptoms, depression, identity struggles, and the emotional impact of injury, setbacks, and pressure. These aren’t just mindset issues—they’re real psychological experiences that can affect both performance and well-being.
An integrated approach means we address both: developing the mental skills to perform, while also working through the underlying challenges that may be getting in the way.
For seven years, Nick traveled the world teaching Army Soldiers performance psychology and resilience skills to be more effective during overseas deployments. He has trained NATO Command in Germany, taught resilience in Korea, and worked at over 15 Army and Air Force installations delivering performance psychology training. Since founding The Tactical Mind in 2019, he has worked with high school, collegiate, Olympic, and professional athletes across a variety of sports. He also serves as a Mental Performance Coordinator for several universities, including Bucknell University and Susquehanna University.
In addition to his work in performance psychology, Nick has advanced training in clinical mental health counseling, allowing him to support athletes not only in performance, but also in the mental and emotional challenges that impact it.
